Playful geometric shapes are the focus of my new ceramic collections.
Ever since my move from America to Australia more than four years ago, I have been fascinated and inspired by the process of re-development and renewal that surrounds me. More than just simple geometry, these patterns in my work are abstract representations of the industrial images found in my adopted hometown, Newcastle, and also echo the memories of cities I’ve called home world-wide.
Each potteryali piece starts with a slab of clay. Using a clay roller and later a rolling pin, I flatten and smooth its surface. Then I cut out the shapes I desire, sometimes using molds to construct my forms. The pieces dry for 1-2 weeks before their first trip to the kiln. I often handpaint several layers of colour (ceramic underglazes and glazes) onto the pieces and finally load them into the kiln for a second firing.
My artwork is made to be used everyday. Enjoy!
